Reflecting back over the past year, I’ve decided to revisit this post and share it once again. Since writing this interview, I have competed in 4 shows this year and headed to my final show this week in Pittsburgh. Gen has led me to a top 5 or better all year long and I am honored to work with her especially when looking back at how it has paid off. To say I am grateful is an understatement!
The proof is in the pudding and here are my results for the year:
- Pittsburgh Championships- 5th
- Bev Francis Atlantic States-1st and overall winner
- JR Nationals-5th
- Team Universe-5th open 4th masters
- North Americans-TBA
I am even more inspired by her now than I was then, because I not only see her dedication to the sport, but also first hand to her athletes on the team. When in doubt (and I am often in doubt) she eases my mind and gives me good reason to follow her guidance, she sympathizes with my struggles as a mom and competitive athlete, she understands my concerns as she once had them too. I never expected to grow to have the kind of respect for her that I have, she has opened my eyes to it on a daily basis. Though I have questioned the process several times and felt uncertain of myself every now and again, Gen reminds me why I love my sport. She not only competes against the best in the industry, she also works daily to help the rest of us along our own journey. I don’t think she sleeps and is perhaps bionic, because she responds to my needs day and night. I have come to appreciate her on so many levels throughout the year and I am honored to have her guidance.
Thank you Gen, truly, for all that you do for so many of us. We love you!
Back in November when I took the stage for the first time in over 3 years, I made the decision to enlist the help of someone that really knew what they were talking about. That someone was Team Bombshell and more specifically, my figure coach Gennifer Strobo. They had 32 Pro Cards earned in 2012 among NPC bikini and figure competitors so I knew they were doing something very right. I had some feelings about hiring just any trainer. If they weren’t targeting this market, how could they possibly know what I needed to be stage ready? Coach G doesn’t just tell me what to do, she walks the walk and let me tell you, she is walking it quite well! Having just placed 8th in the world at the prestigious Arnold Sports Festival, I think I’m in good hands. Congrats Gen!
Gen has guided me to my first ever NPC win last year (having a top 3 placing previously) and now I am off to a great start as I head to the National stage in just a few months. First, I will compete at the NPC Pittsburgh on May 4th and then at the Bev Francis NYC on June 8th in preparation for my biggest show yet. To say I’m super geeked would be an understatement.
Fresh off the stage at the Arnold Classic taking a top 10 placing, I couldn’t be more proud to have this fit mom as my mentor. Get to know a bit more about Gennifer Strobo in my recent interview:
TLG: Where do you currently reside?
GS: I live in lake Mary, FL and work in Daytona Beach.
TLG: Have you always been fit and in great shape?
GS: Not really, I’ve always been skinny, but sort of skinny fat until I began training at the end of 2007.
TLG: When did you first discover your passion for health and fitness?
GS: I went to a competition in 2007; saw these amazing women doing something for themselves and I got hooked. I’ve always had a passion for cooking healthy though.
TLG: How long have you been with Team Bombshell?
GS: Since I started competing. I joined them in the beginning of Bombshell just as it was starting in the end of 2007.
TLG: Did you play any sports in school?
GS: I was a fencer for quite a few years. Ranked 7th in the nation at 15.
TLG: How long have you been competing?
GS: For 5 years
TLG: What titles do you hold or top placing’s?
GS: I hold 3 IFBB pro wins, Toronto pro 2011, Hartford Europa Show of Champions, 2011 and the Kentucky Pro 2011. In my pro debut I placed 3rd and qualified for the Olympia. I’ve been to it 3 years in a row and am now prepping for my 2nd Arnold Ms. Figure International.
TLG: How many children do you have and do they follow your lead with regards to a healthy lifestyle?
GS: I have 2 daughters, 14 & 17. Best kids ever and I’m so proud of both of them. We always eat healthy at our home. They both like to indulge at times though, but who doesn’t? Recently my oldest started an Instagram called @finessandglitter and it is designed to show teens how to eat right, different exercises and of course beauty tips.
TLG: Do you watch calories or is it more about macros for you?
GS: I never count calories. I follow the plan given to me by my trainer, Team Bombshell, and never have to think about it. Every month it is different and weekly it’s changed at times when I’m in show prep.
TLG: What is your favorite cheat meal?
GS: I’m a sucker for pizza, BBQ chicken and frozen yogurt. At times I just love a large bowl of oats with fruit and nuts in it. Comfort food
TLG: Favorite supplement?
GS: Recently I started using Metabolic Nutrition’s vanilla cake protein for my shake and it tastes amazing, I also use Cellucor’s Aminos
TLG: What are your thoughts on HIIT vs. slow steady state cardio?
GS: I just follow my cardio plan, but I prefer the HIIT as I think it helps maintain muscle and shapes you better.
TLG: How many days a week do you workout?
GS: 5 days
TLG: What is your favorite hobby or activity outside of the gym?
GS: Well, between work, travel for work, food prep and gym, my favorite hobby has got to be my family. Whether we’re hanging out on the couch watching a movie, putting together a puzzle or even bowling. Anytime with my kids and my guy Aaron I cherish.
TLG: What is your favorite body part to train?
GS: Love training shoulders and booty too.
TLG: What is your favorite exercise to perform?
GS: I love lateral raises. They suck, but work great for me.
TLG: Do you have any sponsors you’d like to mention?
GS: I’m currently sponsored by Eat to Grow. I am managed by FMG, Fitness Management Group and can be contacted for guest posing, modeling, sponsorship opportunities, product endorsements & appearances exclusively through FMG at:
